Concerts In the Park - The Kal Bergendahl Project
Thursday, August 07, 2014
6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The Kal Bergendahl Project (KBP) was formed in 2005 and is made up of several diverse musicians spanning the southeast Wisconsin area. The group’s founder and bassist, Kal Bergendahl, embarked on this project venturing to combine smooth, soulful jazz with edgy funk. The group’s sounds are reminiscent of Jeff Lorber, Joshua Redman and Snarky Puppy.
“Kal Bergendahl is the guy with the top notch smooth-jazzy, soulful, R&B funkalicious band.”
Paddy Fineran, Kenosha News
With the unique and interesting blend of musical variety, KBP has created a musical sound that has attracted a wide audience and diverse fan base. Because of the group’s diversity they can customize their live show to best suit a given venue/audience. For jazz festivals and venues the group focuses on the jazz side while switching gears to incorporate funk and other styles at broader festivals and venues.
“Their unique sound, clear and energetic, yet soulful, could be likened to a combination of David Sanborn and Norah Jones…” Patte Geary, The Sun, Suburban Chicago News
During the past eight years KBP has recorded three CDs and performed throughout the southeast Wisconsin area. Some notable performances include; Bastille Days/Jazz in the Park (Milwaukee), Summer Sizzle (Milwaukee), Washington Park Jazz (Milwaukee), Jazz Crawl for the Arts (Plymouth), Concerts in the Park (Green Lake), Concert on the Lakefront (Lake Geneva), U.W. Parkside (Kenosha), Lakefront Festival of the Arts (Milwaukee), Jean’s Jazz Series (Racine), Downtown Summer Concert Series (Winthrop Harbor,Il.), Jon McLaughlin at Carthage College (Kenosha), An Evening of Dinner & Jazz (Lake City, MI), Sounds of Christmas (Grand Rapids, MI), MLK Celebration at Gateway College (Kenosha), Twilight Jazz (Kenosha), Fourth of July Celebration (Sheboygan), Square Tunes (Glendale), Music Under Glass (Milwaukee).
KBP gives Kal and the other members of the band the opportunity to take the next step in their playing and creativity. “I wanted to have a group which has the ability to have any member lead, whether with the melody or solos,” he explains. “My goal is to give a jazz experience which brings audiences together, gets their toes tapping and souls singing."
“What people are saying…”
“Oh my goodness! I’m in shock! How wonderful! Thank you, thank you SO much Kal! People are still talking about it; many wish they had invited more people so they could have heard you guys. We were so blown away that night. You are all so very talented!”
Maggie Graff. Genesis House of Southeast Wisconsin-Jazz for Genesis. Dec. 10th, 2013
“I enjoyed your performance very much. I would be happy to work with you in the future”. Kris Kochman. Community Relations Liaison-Kenosha Mayors Office-Lightin’ Up Kenosha. Dec. 2nd 2013“Your show was fantastic and set the bar very high for all to follow.”
