This landmark non-profit, volunteer-run railroad operates 10-mile round trips from its East Troy depot and museum to the turn of the century-styled depot at the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago. Riders can detrain to enjoy this full service farmer’s market with delicious foods before returning to East Troy. For those wanting to know more about this yesteryear 19th and 20th century mode of travel, the depot features a memorabilia museum, fully running model railroad lay-out and gift shop. Relive the Spirit of America's Heartland Explore this premier outdoor museum of 19th century rural and immigrant farm life. Costumed interpreters perform the daily tasks of farmers and shopkeepers in more than 65 historic buildings. Nearly a dozen ethnic groups are represented at the 1870s Crossroads Village and 10 farmsteads, stocked with many rare breeds of horses, oxen and hogs. The gardens and fields are planted with many heirloom varieties of grains, flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables. Nature trails, seasonal special events, restaurant, museum store and more. We appreciate donations. We don’t take reservations. If there are more than fifteen in your group, please consider making arrangements for a private program at some other date and time. Yerkes offers opportunities several times every month throughout the year for people age twelve and up to observe with a two-foot diameter telescope, weather permitting.
